The Old French Concession area is great for shopping, especially around Huai Hai Middle Road, where there are several shopping centres, including the Japanese MZL Isetan Department Store, and many fancy boutiques line this very prosperous street. There is an open-air market on Xiang Yang Road and one can buy all the fake designer stuff here, including jewellery. On the Huai Hai , one will see the modern styled Shanghai library. Also here is the Fu Xing Park, which is very European in style. The Long Hua Temple is around here as well as the home of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and Memorial Hall. In the Old city, Yu Yuan has the more traditional feel to the place with lovely rock gardens, walk ways and great Chinese teahouses. The Yu Gardens here are well worth visiting. The rather touristy shopping bazaar is always packed full of bargain hunters buying all sorts of stuff, like the local traditional Chinese dress or other unusual Chinese medicines. Pu Dong is mainly the financial district of Shanghai and has many high-rise office buildings. But what is fascinating, is viewing the Old Town and the Bund from this side of town. One can also go up the imposing Oriental Pearl TV Tower that is one of the tallest structures in Asia. The view from here is brilliant and will give you a good idea of what the city is really like. Also worth visiting is the 88 floor Jin Mao Building, which has beautiful architecture. This is a real modern showcase reflecting Shanghais prosperity. Also if one is down at the river, make sure to take the Huang Pu River Tour, which is very highly recommended. |
