The restaurant scene in Shanghai is perpetually expanding and improving with a great variety of cuisine on offer for the tourist as well as the locals. One can find a range of restaurants to suit all price brackets and will offer some great Chinese fast food that will keep you on the move. If one wants some Mexican food, head for JJ Mariachis, which has great wine and live music. The Irish pub called O'Malleys will pour you a pint of Guinness while you are waiting, and you can chill out on the lovely patio outside, and bask in the sunshine while at the same time watch all the hustle and bustle of the area. So, if its French cuisine, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, Burmese, Italian pizza, or Hungarian Goulasch, Shanghai will offer it all on a plate. Home style Shanghainese food will fairly impress the tourist that wants to savour a taste of the East, while Cantonese restaurants will rival their Hong Kong counterparts by serving fine food in top class surroundings. Head down to the Bund, and one can enter the M on the Bund restaurant, which offers some great cuisine, with spectacular views of the Bund as well as Pu Dong Shanghai. The prices are a little expensive, but worth the visit. Around Nan Jing Road, one will find several restaurants near the Shanghai Centre. From Tony Romas barbecued ribs, to the Hard Rock Cafe, and Malones restaurant, all represent the American food culture with their great steaks and fries. Why not check out the local restaurant, Bi Feng Tang, which offers some great Cantonese dim sum dishes. The Gongdelin Vegetarian Restaurant serves up very generous helpings of wholesome veggie food in a great Chinese style. Around the Old French Concession Area, visit the Henry Restaurant, which serves up Shanghainese food and afterwards head for a drink to the 1931 Cafe Pub, which resembles what a bar in the 1930s looked like in Shanghai. Sashas Restaurant here is set in an old restored Colonial mansion, and offers some great continental dishes in a most beautiful setting composed of wood furnishings. The Goya Bar has a great reputation for serving up some nice Martinis to the tourists. |
