One can explore this great city on foot. Shanghai is very intimate and one will not get lost here, but one who comes here to see a part of traditional China will be disappointed. Shanghai has a more colonial past, and this can be found in the Old French Concession area, where European architecture watches over the tree lined streets in this area. The Bund is definitely one of the most photographed parts of Shanghai, and it gives the tourist a great feeling of grandeur. It overlooks the great Huang Pu River as well as the Pu Dong district, and is a great area to walk around. This area provides a great contrast from the Old and New parts of Shanghai. Along the Nan Jing Road one will witness the daily hustle and bustle of Shanghai life. A part of the road has been pedestrianised and attracts lots of people to the area to see what the vendors are selling. Not far away is the People's Square, which is located at the centre of downtown Shanghai, and the Shanghai Museum. This area is a good place to stop, relax, find a place to sit down and gaze at the comings and goings of the locals. It is really fascinating. There is an underground shopping mall, which sells all sorts of things, from fashion to cosmetics and luxury goods to keep everyone looking beautiful. When Nan Jing East Road lights up at night with all its fine neon lights, it sort of resembles Hong Kong. There are two Buddhist temples around here. The Jade Buddha Temple has a beautiful large jade Buddha that was transported from Burma to here. Lots of tourists visit here to say a few prayers and relax in the comfort of tranquility. |
